Edjacent: A Call to Action

Whenever we have a question and don’t ask it, we rob ourselves and others of small moments of learning. When we don’t speak up, we squander an opportunity to innovate or contribute to creating a better organization. Hacking School Culture: designing Compassionate Classrooms by Angela Stockman and Ellen Feig Gray

This was not supposed to happen yet.

Edjacent is a passion project that was meant to simmer for awhile, to be a little more perfect before reaching the world. We wanted to get the message right, test the idea with a trusted few. We were going to create and release content at a trickle pace, getting it just right before sharing it with the world. But times have changed and sometimes big ideas happen on their own timeline.

“Edjacent is an educator design collaborative made up of educators who dream of a better world for our students and their teachers.” We wrote that more than a year ago, but it has been in development for our whole careers, since we were students ourselves. We’ve wanted to do something, be something more than our job titles. Have you felt that too? Then you are part of “we”.

Here’s what we want to know from you:

1. What do you care about more than anyone else? What do you know about more than most? What are you consistently asked to lead about or what do you secretly treasure as one of your greatest strengths as an educator? In other words, what is your niche?

2. How does that niche translate in this current environment of mass homeschooling and forced educational transformation? How can your skills be helpful to others at a time when we need to share most?

3. What medium would be best for sharing your talents? Can you write a blog post? Would you like to create an online course for your peers? Host a webinar? Record a podcast? Don’t be afraid of knowing the medium well- think about how your idea can get out quickly.

4. How can we help you help others who may need you? What do you need help and support in to get your idea out into the world?

Edjacent is not ready yet, but it does not have a choice. This community seeks to be a light source and we all need that light right now. We need an opportunity to take action instead of just talking. We need you to share with us so we can all be better.

We can’t help but wonder, how can the world benefit from gathering these big ideas in one place? How can we immediately transform teaching and learning in small and big ways? What might that do for teachers and children in the long term?

And you have treasures hidden within you - extraordinary treasures - and so do I, and so does everyone around us. And bringing those treasures to light takes work and faith and focus and courage and hours of devotion, and the clock is ticking, and the world is spinning, and we simply do not have time anymore to think so small.
